Image Processing (Undergraduate)

The Boulder Laboratory for 3-D Electron Microscopy of Cells in Boulder, Colorado studies the structure of cells. Their electron microscopes produce large three-dimensional images of cells which then must be processed to locate the structures in the images.

As part of my undergraduate research, I worked with Kristian Sandberg at the University of Colorado, Boulder on automatically detecting these structures.

Toward this end, we used a combination of image denoising techniques (anisotropic diffusion and total-variation) along with the Chan and Vese segmentation algorithm in an attempt to find these structures. Below we show some examples of the types of results obtained.
