| DICUSSION SECTION: | Section is held on Tuesdays from 12:00pm-12:50pm in MS 6229. The discussion section will be a time for students to get help with homework and gain additional mastery of the material. While attendance is not required it is strongly recommended that you go. |
| HOMEWORK: |
Homeworks will be assigned on a weekly basis. They will be announced in class as well as posted on the course website. Homework assignments are to be turned in during class on the day that they are due. You may turn an assignment in early by giving it to the professor or the TA before the due date. Each homework assignment will be graded out of 20 points, every day past the due date that you turn the homework in you will lose two points. NO late homework will be accepted after June 5. The lowest homework score will be dropped. While you may work on problems in groups, you are expected to write up the homework by yourself (i.e., not copy off of others). Further, the homeworks should be neatly written and legible, you can lose points for the homework being poorly organized, illegible, and of course for having incorrect answers. Students should first attempt to complete the homework assignments by themselves and then seek outside help (i.e., other students, the TA or the instructor) for any problems they are not able to complete. |
| TEXTBOOK: | Applied Combinatorics, by Alan Tucker. We will cover material from chapters 1-2, 4-8 in this quarter (more information on what we will cover can be found in the course calendar). |
| CALCULATORS: | A scientific calculator will be useful in doing some of the homework problems. Calculators will NOT be permitted on exams. |
| EXAMS: | There will be two midterm exams and a final exam for the course. The first midterm will cover chapters 5 and 6, the second midterm will cover chapters 1, 7 and 8, and the final will be comprehensive with more emphasis on material from chapters 2 and 4. (For the date of the exams consult the course calendar.) The midterms will be given during class on their scheduled dates. The exams are closed book and closed notes. Exams must be taken during the scheduled times. There will be NO makeup exams with the exception of medical emergencies or university approved absences. Taking the final exam is a requirement for passing the course. There will be no final given before the scheduled time. |
| GRADES: | The course grade will be determined by the cumulative percentage of scores at the end of the quarter. This is calculated by taking the BETTER of the two schemes:
20% Homework, 25% Best midterm, 10% Worst midterm, 45% Final Any issues about grading for homeworks or exams must be addressed within two weeks of the turn-in date. After that time no score changes will be allowed. Grades will be available online through the myUCLA website. |
| CHEATING: | Cheating is stupid and a serious offense. Students caught cheating will be reported. Do NOT cheat!! |
