Assignment #1

Announcments:

Homework:

Due in lecture on Friday, October 8.

Please read the sections of the text listed in Handout B for lectures each day.

Also, please have at least a draft of your homework done before discussion section--don't show up not having thought about the homework.

Some homework problems are to hand in (THI); others are to do but not to hand in (NTHI). You can ask questions about all of these, and you should review all of them for exams. It would be good to look also at some of the problems that were not assigned. The answers to some are in the back of the text.

Also to hand in:

C-1. How many possible functions are there from a 5-element set to a 3-element set? (Say why.)

C-2. In lecture it was mentioned that 0! = 1 and that Gamma(n) = (n-1)! when n is an integer. Check by doing the integral that Gamma(1) does give the right value of 0!. (Since it's an integral to infinity, you need to integrate from 0 to an unspecified number A and then let A go to infinity.)
