Text: Linear Algebra with Applications 3E
(Third Edition) by Otto Bretscher (we will cover most of chapters 1-3
and 5-8).

Introduction
to linear algebra: systems of linear
equations, matrix algebra, linear independence, subspaces, bases and
dimension,
orthogonality,
least-squares methods, determinants,
eigenvalues and eigenvectors, matrix diagonalization, and symmetric
matrices.

grade will be based upon the maximum of the following two schemes:

- Homework will be submitted weekly on Wednesday in lecture (except
for the first week, when it is due on Friday).
- A subset of the problems will be graded by a "reader" and
returned the following Tuesday in discussion.
- The lowest homework score will be dropped.
- No late homework will be accepted.
- Your
homework must include full solutions. Answers alone will receive
no credit.
- You are encouraged to work together on the homework, but you must
write it up on your own, without looking at another person's paper.
Examinations
- There will be two midterms and one final.
- No makeup exams will be given
under any circumstances. Please see below for the
dates.
- You must bring a a photo ID with you to all exams.
- Please be familiar with the dean's Guide to
Academic Integrity.
