Textbook: Otto Bretscher, Linear Algebra with Applications, third edition, Prentice Hall, 2004.
We will cover chapter 1, chapter 2, chapter 3, sections 1-4 of chapter 5, chapter 6, sections 1-5 of chapter 7, and chapter 8.

Catalog description: Lecture, three hours; discussion, one hour. Requisite: course 32A with a grade of C- or better. Introduction to linear algebra: systems of linear equations, matrix algebra, linear independence, subspaces, bases and dimension, orthogonality, least-squares methods, determinants, eigenvalues and eigenvectors, matrix diagonalization, and symmetric matrices.

Exams:

  1. The first mid-term exam was held on Friday, April 25 (Week 4) in KNSY PV 1240B.
  2. The second mid-term exam was held on Friday, May 16 (Week 7) in BOELTER 3400.
  3. The final exam will be held on Tuesday, June 10, 11:30am-2:30pm, in MS 6627.

Homework:

  1. There will be 10 homework assignments.
  2. The lowest two homework scores will be dropped. This is to accommodate missing two homework assignments due to illness, travel, etc. No other accommodations will be made.
  3. Homework is due during the first ten minutes of lecture on Friday.
  4. Homework received during lecture after the first ten minutes will be marked half-off. No late homework will be accepted after the Friday lecture.
  5. Homework will be returned in the Tuesday discussion section.

Grading:

The final grade will be based on the maximum of the following:
  1. 10% homework, 20% first mid-term, 20% second mid-term, 50% final exam;
  2. 10% homework, 20% higher mid-term score, 70% final exam.
This is to accommodate missing a mid-term due to illness, travel, etc. No other accommodations for the mid-terms will be made.

It is necessary to take the final exam in order to receive a passing grade for the course.
