Starting week three of classes, there will be an honors section for
this class. This section is in addition to the discussion section
offered on Thursdays.

Meetings: Thursdays 12-1 in MS6118.

Plan of Action: During third and/or fourth week of classes I
would like to meet for either a two hour session and two one hour
sessions, to 'make up' for the first two weeks of classes we did not
have an honors discussion section yet. I envision to cover and
discuss some of the sections in the textbook used for this
course, that are 'starred', indicating that they are of a more
theoretical nature. In addition I will have the students derive
results on their own, by giving them a sequence of exercises that
lead to them. Typically this requires you to synthesize material and
subjects not only from this course, but from courses that are
prerequisites for this class, such as 33B and 32A. The evaluation of
the work done in an honors section is not to be directly calculated
into the course grade, but as I see, your ability to handle the
course material will improve upon participating in the honors section
naturally.

Eligibility: Any student enrolled in Math170A this quarter
  can participate.

Qualifications:

To receive honors credit for this course you can miss at most
one of our hourly meetings, and if you do, you have to study the
material and are responsible for it in subsequent meetings.

During the last two weeks of classes, each student will give a
presentation of at most 10 minutes to the group.
