Math 38ABC: Concepts of Elementary School Mathematics
Catalog Description
38A-38B-38C. Concepts of Elementary School Mathematics. Consent of instructor required for enrollment. Not open to freshmen. Courses 38A, 38B, and 38C form a one-year sequence for prospective elementary school teachers. Counting numbers and other subsystems of real numbers, arithmetic operations and algorithms, place value; algebraic thinking, function concept; geometry of basic figures in the plane and in space, measurement, symmetry; elementary probability and data analysis. Emphasis on problem solving, math reasoning, and sense-making procedures.
General Information
Math 38ABC is a sequence of three courses for prospective elementary school teachers that helps students to develop an understanding of the mathematics they will teach in elementary school. The courses are designed to introduce prospective elementary teachers to both theory and practice related to mathematics education. Students participate in a variety of activities and investigations as they explore school math concepts from a problem solving perspective.

Course requirements include problems of the week, journals, quizzes, readings, reports, performance assessment, and portfolio. Regular participation and attendance are mandatory. There is a course reader for each course. Further reading is assigned from an additional book, which varies from year to year. A modest lab fee is assessed in each course for manipulative materials.

Various math educators (as Lisa Lopez, Helen Chan, and the resident Visiting High School Math Teacher) have taught Math 38ABC in recent years. Dr. Shelley Kriegler has oversight over the squence of courses Math 38ABC. More information about the courses can be obtained directly from her, at kriegler@math.ucla.edu.

Due to the mode of instruction, class sizes of Math 38ABC may be limited, and enrollment is by PTE.

The courses Math 38ABC are among the few undergraduate Mathematics Department courses that meet on a Tuesday-Thursday schedule. Math 38A is offered Fall Quarter only, Math 38B is offered Winter Quarter only, and Math 38C is offered Spring Quarter only. Commencing Fall Quarter 2004, only one section of Math 38ABC is offered each term.
