Every two years, SIAM presents the Ralph E. Kleinman Prize to one individual for "outstanding research, or other contributions, that bridge the gap between mathematics and applications."

Second year PhD student Kevin Miller has been selected for the 2019 National Defense Science and Engineering Graduate (NDSEG) Fellowship. With the purpose of increasing the number of U.S. citizens and nationals trained in science and engineering disciplines of military importance, awardees receive full tuition and all mandatory fees coverage for up to three years.

On August 19-23, 2019, the University of Washington (UW) will hold a conference titled *Modern Aspects of Complex Analysis and Its Applications *in Seattle. The conference is in honor of UCLA Mathematics Professor John Garnett's retirement and UW Mathematics Professor Don Marshall's 70th birthday.

Team UCLA Bruins placed as a semi-finalist in the 2019 Society of Actuaries Student Research Case Study Challenge. All except one of the undergraduate team members were freshman including Bingcui (Violet) Guo, Calvin Ng, Roger Yuan, and Xijuan Liu.

Last summer, Profs. Jun Yin (UCLA) (and Ph.D. student Fan Yang), Paul Bourgade (New York University) and Horng-Tzer Yau (Harvard University) published a series of paper that proves the existence of a mathematical signature called “universality” which certifies that a material conducts electricity.
