Math X472 - MATH AND TECHNOLOGY Unit Summaries

Participants will learn to use commonly available technology tools and applications to improve the quality and efficiency of their professional work and increase student understanding of important mathematical concepts.  Some of the applications planned for exploration include creating professional documents using POWERPOINT, MATHTYPE, and graphics from MSWORD, exploring algebraic relationships with EXCEL, downloading internet data and analyzing it using FATHOM, exploring geometric relationships with GEOMETER SKETCHPAD, and analysis of rates of motion using a the TI calculator-based ranger.  A laptop computer is recommended. Prerequisite: Math X468B (Topics in Algebra and Geometry)

GETTING STARTED - MATH AND TECHNOLOGY
Participants are introduced to some of the basic technologies that will be used throughout the course.

CREATING TABLES AND DRAWINGS IN MICROSOFT WORD: PICK'S THEOREM
Participants continue their exploration of Microsoft Word, focusing on making graphic organizers and using the Drawing toolbar. They explore Pick’s Theorem, which relates the area of a lattice polygon to the number of lattice points on its boundary and in its interior.

EXCEL
Participants learn to use excel to manipulate data and create visual representations. Participants will use unit pricing, unit conversions, proportions, and dimensional analysis as tools for comparison shopping.

EXCEL 2
Participants will continue their exploration of Excel.  Participants will learn to use Excel to input, manipulate, display and analyze data.

POWERPOINT
Participants will use Powerpoint to investigate a probability situation called the Monty Hall problem based on the television show "Let's Make a Deal." Participants will research and write a recommendation review for an educational website. Finally, participants will create a Powerpoint presentation combining various technology elements covered in the course.

GRAPHING CALCULATORS 1
Participants are introduced to various math activities on the graphing calculator.  They are shown how to use TI Connect to paste calculator screen shots into Word documents.

GRAPHING CALCULATORS 2
Participants continue to work with various math activities on the graphing calculator.

INTRODUCTION TO GEOMETER'S SKETCHPAD
Participants are introduced to the basic applications of Geometer’s Sketchpad.

INTRODUCTION TO GEOMETER'S SKETCHPAD 2
Participants are introduced to more basic applications of Geometer’s Sketchpad.
