This year's retreat will take place on Tuesday, September
23, at May's Landing out on Point Dume. Travel time from UCLA
is 30-45 minutes. Our meeting will start at 9:30 and definitely
end by 4:30. You are welcome to come earlier (~9:00) to enjoy
breakfast on the patio overlooking the beautiful Pacific Ocean!
See you at Mays Landing,
Jim Ralston
Tentative order of topics and discussion leaders:
I. Dean Chan
There are many questions that Tony may be able to answer regarding topics V, VI and VII below, but he will be only able to attend the retreat from 9:30-11. So I have put him first on the program.
II. The Undergraduate Program (Ron Miech)
III. The Graduate Program (Christoph Thiele)
IV. VIGRE (Robert Greene)
LUNCH (Lunch will be provided; if you have not already RSVP'd to Bobbi, please do so by noon 9/16/03)
V. The Cuts
VI. Hiring
VII. The Proposed Logic Center
VIII. Miscellaneous items that have been suggested for discussion:
- The annoying disappearance of ungraded HW from the mail room.
- The UCLA Mathematics Report Series
- A different Colloquium format to increase attendance.

Parking at Mays' Landing
As you enter the gate, you will see that immediately to your left
is a cleared space that allows for ten cars. There are five rows,
separated by young Magnolia trees. Please park carefully as not
to damage the trees. The first five cars that arrive should pull
all the way forward and that will allow for five additional cars
to park behind. To the right, there are several parking places.
Please be sure to park on an angle in order to make the most use
of this parking area. Please do not park in front of the house or
in front of the garage. This must be reserved for caterers and house
staff. There is no street parking. Carpooling is strongly encouraged.
