Teacher Continuing Education
The Curtis Center aims to increase the quality of pre-collegiate mathematics activity by providing effective opportunities for K-12 teachers to deepen their understanding of the mathematics they teach, extend their knowledge of mathematics, and learn how to apply their mathematical knowledge to the work of teaching. To this end we support:

Exercise Your Common Core: Summer Workouts for Math Teachers
The UCLA Curtis Center for Mathematics and Teaching is pleased to announce five summer workshops for K-12 math teachers. Each 20-hour workshop will include an overview of the structure of the new Common Core Standards, a detailed look at the focus standards for the course, classroom-ready lessons to help teachers understand and teach some of the most challenging content standards. Instructors are experienced classroom teachers, approved by the UCLA Mathematics Department. Course curricula are designed by Curtis Center staff serving on national and statewide Common Core leadership teams.

Curtis Center Mathematics and Teaching Conference: March 3, 2012: Exercise Your Common Core
The sixth annual UCLA Mathematics Department's Philip C. Curtis Jr. Center for Mathematics and Teaching Conference: Exercise Your Common Core, was a great success! The conference focused on the Common Core Standards for mathematics and was composed of a keynote talk and breakout sessions in three areas: Common Core Preparation for Elementary, Middle and High School. This year's keynote speaker was Jason Zimba, co-founder of Student Achievement Partners. As a lead writer of the Common Core State Standards for mathematics, Jason was instrumental in achieving a new state of the art for internationally-benchmarked, college and career ready standards based on evidence. In addition, Susan Gendron, Policy Coordinator for the SMARTER Balance Assessment Consortium, gave a plenary talk on the new Common Core assessments. Finally, an outstanding group of speakers agreed to present in the breakout sessions. The day proved to be thought provoking and worthwhile for mathematics teachers, mathematics educators, and mathematicians alike. Thank you to all those who attended and we hope to see you next year!

UCLA MCPT The Mathematics Content Program for Teachers and Students
MCPT offers authorization programs for teachers who wish to earn authorizations to teach mathematics through grade 9.  Their 8-course program is the only comprehensive program approved by the California Commission on Teacher Credentialing for supplementary authorization in mathematics, and their 12-course program is approved for subject matter authorization.  Each four-unit course generally meet once a week for 10 weeks at locations in the greater Los Angeles area.  MCPT also provides mathematics professional development to schools and districts.  For more information, please visit www.math.ucla.edu/mcpt.

MDTP The UCLA site of the Mathematics Diagnostic Testing Project
The UCLA Site of MDTP serves Los Angeles and Ventura county teachers by distributing, scoring, and reporting the results of tests that measure student readiness for secondary mathematics courses. The diagnostic information resulting from MDTP testing can help students and teachers identify specific areas where additional study or review is needed. New online testing services provide immediate results and enhanced reporting capabilities. The UCLA Site Director is also available to help teachers in the appropriate use of MDTP materials.

MDTP is a statewide project funded by the California State University, the University of California and the California Academic Partnership Program. Paper testing, reporting and consultation services are provided free of charge, online testing is $1 per student per test. For additional information and contacts, please see http://mdtp.ucsd.edu

UCLA California Teach
The Executive Offices of the California Mathematics Projects
The California Mathematics Project consists of 19 regional sites located at college and university campuses throughout the state. Each of these regional sites designs programs that meet the unique needs of schools and teachers in their region. Programs may include: intensive institute models, teacher leadership institutes, year-round workshops targeted on a specific mathematical topic, formal partnerships (or contracted services) with schools and/or districts, and programs aimed at specific school constituencies (e.g. students, aides, administrators, parents).

Ultimately, the goal of the CMP is to enhance the quality of California’s K-12 mathematics education by increasing teachers’ mathematical content knowledge and pedagogical content knowledge, and by supporting and developing leadership skills.
