Circle Docents

Advanced Circle

Andre Chen Andre Chen is an undergraduate at UCLA majoring in Mathematics for Teaching. He aspires to be a high school math teacher who maximizes student learning by combining hard work and perseverance with a passion for math and excellence. In addition to teaching, he enjoys reading about current issues in education, studying Spanish, and breakdancing.
John Lensmire is a third year graduate student in mathematics here at UCLA. He is interested in logic and set theory. This is John’s third year working with the Math Circle. Outside of math, he enjoys playing and watching basketball.
Elizabeth Lim Elizabeth Lim is a recent graduate of UCLA with a Mathematics/Economics degree. She loves teaching children and has been teaching kids since she was in high school. This is the second year she is involved with the Math Circle.
Prateek Puri has been working at UCLA Math Circle since March 2010. Prateek is a third year physics major plans on either pursuing graduate studies or going to professional school in the future. In addition to physics, Prateek is also very interested in mathematics and enjoys teaching others.

Beginners Circle

Jeff Hicks Hi! I am a fourth year math student at UCLA, with interestes in algebra, topology, and geometry. You can frequently find me in either the student math center, out at the bombshelter, or Salsa dancing at the Bruin Bear.
Morgan Joeck Morgan Joeck is excited to be part of the Math Circle again. He teaches algebra and geometry for LAUSD at Bishop Conaty – Our Lady of Loretto. He went to UCLA for his Bachelor’s degree in psychology and Master’s degree in education. Morgan is a member of the California Mathematics Council and National Council of Teachers of Mathematics and attends their local and national conferences annually.
Derek Jung Hello! My name is Derek and I am a third year Pure Math major. The main reason I enjoy math is that I think math improves me as a person. It provides me with a sense of self-confidence. I like to think of math problems as do-it-yourself construction projects. You have all these tools and pieces sitting around, seemingly disconnected. However, there is that little spark and once you hit it, the completion of the project seems to immediately fall into place. As the cliche goes, ’Its not the destination, but the journey.’ And thats why I like math!
Isaac Solomon This year I am working on completing my masters in Mathematics at UCLA. My interests are broad, but I am particularly interested in algebra, topology and logic. I also enjoy teaching mathematics and helping others see the beauty and challenge of the subject. I hope to utilize my academic and pedagogical experience to inspire and educate students at LAMC.
Jonathan Wolf is a senior year mathematics undergraduate at UCLA interested in Analysis and Algebra. I enjoy teaching math and helping people understand the solution to problems.

Early Elementary Circle

Kaley Barnett Kaley Barnett is a first year undeclared-engineering student who enjoys teaching children and making learning exciting. She loves to spend time with her family, snow ski, and play with her dog. She is very excited to work with the students of the Junior Math Circle!
Melinda Speckmann is a third year undergraduate student at UCLA who is majoring in Biophysics and minoring in French. She is working towards pharmacy school after she graduates. She thinks physics is dead useful in the real world. This year, she is teaching the Early Elementary group.
Cory Williams Cory Williams is a second year undergraduate student at UCLA majoring in Chemical Engineering. He has had a passion for math, chemistry, and physics since he was a child. Cory has prior experience in tutoring and finds enjoyment in spreading knowledge and love for mathematics. He is very excited to work for Math Circle this year!

High School Circle

Francisc Bozgan
Michael Hall is a graduate student in the mathematics department at UCLA interested in analysis and partial differential equations. Mike is the an instructor for the LAMC High School Group.
Yingkun Li Yingkun Li is a third year graduate student in the UCLA math department, interested in studying number theory. He enjoys teaching mathematics and has been tutoring since high school. During his spare time, he also likes to play basketball and guitar.
Tudor Padurariu My name is Tudor Padurariu, I am a second year math major at UCLA, with undefined interests. I am involved with the preparation of the high school group for various contests.
Anand Rajagopalan I am a third year graduate student in the UCLA math department and study random matrix theory. I enjoy working with the math circle, having myself been involved in math olympiads. During my spare time, I also like to play squash.

Intermediate Circle

Don Laackman
Angela Lam is a second year Electrical Engineering major who loves physics and math. She enjoys tutoring students in math and in her free time, she enjoys playing tennis and reading.
Jeff Lewis is a charismatic third-year majoring in Atmospheric and Oceanic Sciences. In addition to the Intermediate group leader for the Los Angeles Math Circle, he is a semi-professional landscape photographer and an officer in the Photography Club at UCLA. He is also on the Executive Board of the Regents Scholar Society at UCLA. During the summer he is a Park Ranger in Sequoia and Kings Canyon National Parks. In his free time, he loves hiking and backpacking, especially in the Sierra Nevada mountains.

Huan-Sony Nguyen I am currently a Sophomore, majoring in Computer Science. I love reading, drawing, biking, and doing a lot of different things whenever I have time. Math Circle has been a great opportunity for me to meet, make friends, and learn from a lot of different people, even the kids we teach. I hope we will continue to have a great time here, and this Math family will grow more successful every year! My motto is 'always thirst for more knowledge, always be passionate about what you do, and always inspire others as well as draw inspiration from them'

Junior Circle

Oleg Gleizer One of the greatest mathematicians of the past 20th century, Israel Gelfand, has once told me, ’Oleg, if you understand a math concept, you should be able to explain it to a 4-year-old.’ That is what I do for a living. I teach elements of modern math, typically presented in college, to children age 4 and up. See my book, Modern Math for Elementary Schoolers, for more. The book is a free download at http://www.naturalmath.com/DeltaStreamMedia/OlegGleizerModernMathematics_12_2011.pdf The book is in the public domain, so feel free to share. I have my Ph.D. in Math. from Northeastern University of Boston, was a Hedrick visiting assistant professor at UCLA Math. Dept. and have research papers published in top-ranking journals, including Transactions of the AMS and Advances in Mathematics.
Eli Kirshbaum I grew up in Northern California. I have tutored math students for several years, and recently completed the Calteach middle school teaching program. I am currently majoring in both Art and Mathematics for Teaching at UCLA. I enjoy approaching math as a way of thinking, rather than a series of algorithms. I also enjoy reading, playing soccer, and going to museums.
Nicholas Stich
renning bruns I am an undergraduate math student in my senior year at UCLA. I enjoy bicycling, skiing, and sailing.
