researchers know what you think about your introductory science
courses. Please visit https://www.gseis.ucla.edu/~herisurv/arra/arra1.htm
to complete a short on-line survey. The survey will be available until
01/22/10. ***NOTICE THE WEB ADDRESS HAS CHANGED***
- Homework 1 is now posted for Jan 15. It is a double assignment
since there is no homework due this friday. The rest of the
homeworks will be about half this.
- MIDTERM I INFORMATION:
Midterm I will cover the sections found in Assignment 1 and 2 of your
homework. IMPORTANT SEATING INFORMATION: If your last
name's first letter falls in the range of A-D then you will take your
exam in HUMANITIES A65. E-Z students will be in our usual room HAINES
39.
- Midterm I solutions can
be found here.
- As I am always looking for the opportunity to improve my teaching
and my student's experience my courses I'm offering each student the
chance to earn 2 PTS OF EXTRA CREDIT
ON MIDTERM I ONLY, for answering the following four questions
thoughtfully:
1. What is working well for you in this class? What do you like about
this course?
2. What is not going well for you in this class? What do you dislike
about this course?
3. Suggestions or comments on what the professor can do to improve your
experience in this course.
4. Suggestions or comments on what your TA can do to improve your
experience in this course.
To preserve your anonymity DO NOT write your name or info on this
sheet. I suggest you also type your answers if you can. To record
your extra credit you must bring these questions along with a separate
postet or second sheet of paper which contains your information and
this will be placed in a separate folder for recording. This is
due during the first FIVE MINUTES of class on wednesday, February
10. I will be very strict about receiving this extra credit as
late. If you can not attend please send this along with a friend
as I will not accept this late.
- Thank you class for the reviews: they were constructive and will
help me improve my teaching here at UCLA.
- MIDTERM II INFORMATION:
Midterm II will be on monday February 22 and will cover the sections
found in assignments 3-5 of your
homework. IMPORTANT SEATING INFORMATION: If your last
name's first letter falls in the range of A-D then you will take your
exam in HUMANITIES A65. E-Z students will be in our usual room HAINES
39.
- Study suggestions/help for
MIDTERM II:
1. If you haven't done so already first read every word in each section
in Chapter 4.
2.As per requested in your evaluations I have bolded specific problems
in
the homework section and suggested a few more which I find to be most
important in your study for this midterm. These problems should
help you focus on concepts which I think are important and should be
considered a good study guide.
3. My suggestion is to copy six problems, each from a different
section, and try to do them in about 45 minutes without looking for
help in the book or any specific instructions given on the problem, for
example, "use implicit differentiation to compute..." If you can
perform this test with minimal mistakes 3 or 4 times, with different
sets of problems, you are very close to ready. **Do not forget to time
yourself**
4. As per requested in the evaluations we will have an in class review
on Friday Feb 19, come prepared with questions.
- Midterm II solutions can
be found here.
- Information for FINAL EXAM:
1. The final exam will be cumulative and will be on Friday March
19. IMPORTANT SEATING INFORMATION: If your last
name falls in the range of TRAN through Z then you will take your
exam in HAINES A18. A through TORRES
students will be in our usual room HAINES
39.
2. Suggested problems and bolded problems from previous homework
can now be found on the homework page. I consider these problems
to be an excellent study guide.
3. I would suggest following the advice found above for midterm II.
Though time will be much less of a constraint on the final than
previous midterms, I still suggest giving yourself practice exam
problems, perhaps 10 at a time and give yourself 1.5 hours.
Do this several times.
4. OFFICE HOURS DURING FINAL EXAM WEEK will be the same as before
(Tuesday 10-11:30am and Wednesday 9:30-11am) but with an addition
hour and a half on Tuesday 3:30-5pm. This will provide up to 4.5
office hours for you to take advantage up before the final.
5. GOOD LUCK STUDENTS!
